Staff Profile: SUE SUE

We have traditionally welcomed two Camp Moms per term to help with cabin inspections, transporting campers into town for doctors appointments, and checking in with campers who are having a hard time being away from home. They often travel around to classes during the day and are an extra encouraging and comforting presence at camp. This year, we are so excited to have our first-ever Camp Grand Mom join us! Meet Sue Sue…   I am a fun loving grandmother who loves the outdoors and precious little ones….I grew up in Arkansas in a small town on a lake. I have spent lots of time outdoors swimming, water skiing, fishing, hiking, playing tennis and golf.  and YES, I think I can still do all of those things…I am thrilled to be…

Age Divisions at Camp: How is my camper’s experience customized to their age group?

As we’re gearing up for summer and putting together our staff training manuals, we wanted to share our approach to campers of all ages and how we specialize our programming to best fit each age group. At Lonehollow, campers are categorized into “divisions” which group them with other campers their age.   Cabin assignments, special class offerings, and even overnight trips (for the older campers) are determined by division. This gives campers the opportunity to form strong bonds with their peers and receive a specialized experience based on their age. We even have staff leadership positions, or “Division Directors” for each age group who are focused on creating this memorable experience for your campers.   For example, Pathfinders are our youngest division and therefore tend to be more shy…

Practicing karate with Chuck Norris.   When I have an hour of free time, I like to…: Lift weights with Arnold Schwarzenegger.    My weirdest talent is…: I can do the saltine cracker challenge and whistle.    The furthest place I have traveled…

[gallery] What a blast the past two weekends have been! Family Camp is such a special time and we love hosting these amazing families for a couple of days filled with camp activities, s'mores, carnivals and fun. The purpose for these events is for families to be able to get a feel for Lonehollow prior to sending their camper for the summer. They get to meet the staff, see the facilities, and really experience camp for themselves. Here’s what some of them had to say about their Lonehollow experience…   “We are confident our children will have an amazing experience as campers here. All our worries have been erased from this family experience. We are grateful to have done this as a family prior to sending them alone.“   “Great…

I’m a student at Trinity University studying both Studio Art and Biology. I originally applied to Lonehollow because the time that I spent as a camper is still one of the best experiences of my youth and I knew I wanted to make similar memorable times for another generation to love. Fostering these natural creative instincts is something I value highly.   Personal Interests: Photography, backpacking and camping, Art, Ultimate Frisbee   Weirdest Talent: Having extremely long, dexterous toes and a great radio voice   Furthest Place Visited: Australia and New Zealand. [gallery] As you can tell from the pictures above, we had such a great time at our camp party in Austin yesterday! It’s always good to see old friends and meet new camp families. We had a great turnout of over 130 people at the Austin Country Club and spent about an hour and a half playing games, watching camp videos, and getting excited for camp this year! Since Opening Day is in just over a month and a half, this was our last party before the summer BUT we are already planning our fall parties so make sure to stay tuned for when we’ll be in your city next! Want more? Check out our video from the party as well!

[gallery] In honor of Baby Max’s one month birthday today, we’re reminiscing on the birthdays of last summer! Many parents ask how birthdays are celebrated if they fall during their child’s camp term. We work hard to make every day special but birthdays are definitely celebrated Lonehollow style! And what better way to celebrate your birthday than being surrounded by 350 of your best friends? Campers enjoy a custom-made birthday cake brought right to their table for them, their cabin mates, and any siblings that are at camp to enjoy. The entire dining hall sings and applauds as they blow out the candles. And, as a special treat, parents AND grandparents can call and talk to the birthday girl or boy on the phone sometime during the day.  We love…

Camp Lonehollow Puppy Adoption Application We all remember our childhood dogs. Those furry companions that went everywhere with us and were our friends when we needed one most. Little did we know at the time, our 4-legged friends were also teaching us valuable lessons about responsibility, accountability, and the value of an active lifestyle! At Lonehollow, we are working to help create similar memories for our campers with our “Puppy Park” class. The goal is to give campers knowledge of the care, behavior, and training of dogs while empowering them to handle and care for a dog properly in their own home.  This year, we’re purchasing three puppies for camp and will be adopting them out to three lucky camp families at the end of the summer! If you’re considering…
